Sorry guys, but women really are better drivers

Women are far better drivers than men, new figures reveal. Men commit nine times more motoring offences - including 97 per cent of dangerous driving transgressions. The Home Office research shatters the myth that men are better behind the wheel than women and this has led safety groups to call for the Government to launch a campaign aimed directly at male drivers.

But men do beat women in one area - parking. The figures also reveal that 88 per cent of all traffic offences dealt with by the courts are committed by men. Women are also far less likely to be found drinkdriving, speeding or driving carelessly. Psychologists say a key factor is that women are less likely to speed if they are late because they get less fun out of risk-taking.

People usually speed because they are under pressure, and women have different patterns of obligations. Men are more likely to speed to make a business appointment. A driving survey found that 45 per cent of women believed that motorway speed limits should never be broken, compared with 30 per cent of men. Women were also better at resisting pressure to accelerate when driving in fast-moving traffic, the survey says.
